Actual barrier overstepping as proposed by Rampino and Sanders (1980), among others, probably requires a very rapid sea-level rise in order to preserve the subaerial components of the system intact, but examples have been suggested, for instance, for the northern Adriatic shelf off Italy (Storms et al., 2008). The Atlantic coastal plain is very large and contains many rivers that carried sediment to the coast in the period of lowered sea level during the last Ice Age. This delta is southeast of New Orleans, but the river is slowly shifting its course to the Atchafalaya distributory. Coasts are classified into three groups based on tidal range: microtidal, 02 meter tidal range; mesotidal, 24 meter tidal range; and macrotidal, >4 meter tidal range. Bank reefs, also know as forereefs, extend seaward from other reef types. Barrier island systems develop most easily on wave-dominated coasts with a small to moderate tidal range.
