In the wake of Santana, Bogart had formed a new company and had plans for a film (Melville Goodwin, U.S.A.) in which he would play a general and Bacall a press magnate. The film was successful, although some critics found its plot confusing and overly complicated. Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960) was the first film to pay tribute to Bogart.
