Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. We went past 300 but found the 250-300 was better. There should be a mix of spawning and staged fish in the holes with fresh fish trickling in anytime. (Artificial lures only). Mixed bag action on the Oak, mostly salmon action on the other area smaller tribs. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its Loaner for Life program. And then theres always that concentration of fish and people at the dam. Most anglers report good fishing. It was all spoon and meat bite Saturday. We continue to lobby for water access on the far side or west side of the Waterport dam hydro pool and the rest of the Oak. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Any new precipitation could likewise bring those flows back up and dirty. Guys are getting hook ups daily. If you stayed patient and made some drifts or swings when the good flows returned by mid Apr you could be rewarded with a hungry drop back steelhead. Look for more fish going to gravel on the no doubt water temp warm up this week. The 10,000 pen reared steelhead were towed out to the Oak Orchard River mouth at dusk on Apr 28 and the nets were lowered. Good chances for fresh fish action ahead for this begin part of Mar esp as higher and more stained flows may come and go. Despite the cold, a few diehards have been out there scoring on a some smaller browns and a few fine looking chrome steelhead. Well be back to more seasonable temps for mid and end of week with a chance of showers Thursday. So far thru today the heavier rains have been south of here and the trend looks like the Oak is on the rise while the smaller tribs are barely dropping or holding steady. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. Starting this weekend, they will be fishing at the Bar chasing Kings then return to the Oak around Memorial Day as the Kings migrate east. As soon as the levels come down more trout will show up. Kings have for the most part given up the ghost and now some carcasses are seen seeding the waterway. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions especially in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. The additional releases from the Erie Canal are triggering early Browns! Any future precipitation could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. The brown trout action in nearby tribs that was pretty good is a little slower lately thanks to the lower and clearer flows. Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. He cites that the Salmon showed up earlier in the season due to a number of factors, including a warmer winter, less ice on Lake Erie and an earlier Spring. Theres some brisk NE lakeshore winds that will make for some rough seas and cool and probably dirty water color. You can lay a rod down on the bank or net a fish or walk around a wading obstruction for safety but anglers cannot be on the Archers Club grounds on the dates not included above. No doubt as flows drop and clear even a little guys should get onto more fish, especially brown trout. Canal water is still high from our rainfall. It looks like some of the weather we missed out on thru the earlier winter is coming now in the later winter. Fish for perch in Sodus Bay near the north end breach, next to Bonnie Castle and Oak Park on the east side and the west side next to the old malt house. For now the drifting conditions are pretty nice all around. Lake effect rain dumped three inches of rain around the Port Bay area over the weekend. But with cooler temps this week, the water temp has finally started dropping. Forecast is for continued seasonable weather thru the week with highs around 50F and dropping back into the 30sF at night. Flows in the Oak were higher yesterday but expecting that to retreat again toward medium and slightly stained. Fishing pressure is down all around, especially in the Oak. Cool nights and cooperative winds should make for better battles with more staging Kings and trout chances as well. With the previous high and off color flows in the Oak its been a bit of a challenge for good drifts and swings. The better reports I hear are from guys that have some Kings migrate past them or hold and they get some drifts to them. This will entice more brown trout, steelhead and Atlantic and Pacific salmon to run up these streams, improving conditions for the fish and expanding opportunities for anglers. OAK ORCHARD Fishing Report 2023 | United States Not a blow out but enough precipitation to bump everything up with a nice spate of water for some fresh fish migrations. Slower action there reported just lately after some good quality fish were hooked in the previous higher and dirtier water color. Shorebound casters get in on the brown trout action at the break of spring thru Mar, Apr or May. Chance of fresh steelhead on the backside of the last higher flows or at least the past falls browns and steelhead should be redistributed. Look for those smaller waterways to open back up again slowly like thru the end of this week or weekend. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. Especially with the way the weather is proceeding. With cool water temperatures, rig depths of 30 to 80 ft down are getting Troutman 2 anglers kings coho and some whopper lake trout! Click here for the Brookfield Varick Fish Safely brochure. Once pressured, browns may move a little distance from the tails of the salmon but they will still likely be in the closest broken water downstream. Good action reported, consistent from most anglers on the Oak thru the past end of weekend and yesterday. Coupled with the rise in flows, hopefully, that will bring on some more brown trout migrations in the Oak. Look for drop back fish to be living there for now, with the other most productive spots being right at the dam or overflow channel pool. There is some icing especially in downstream slow water spots and some bank ice. If anglers can get their drift thru the Kings, theres been some browns and steelhead hooked too. Tuesdays fishing was EPIC despite it being a bit breezy. As of today flows were high consisting of something close to wide open turbine flows and a little bit of overflow water. Flies and egg imaginations have been the best baits for the salmon. Johnson Creek had a nice bump in flows and got stained and guys reported some salmon on the move there. Josh Dunkelburger of Olcott reports some walleye and carp were being caught off the NYPA fishing platform this week. Agreeable temps are expected today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) with a forecasted snow storm expected Thursday. On the dates not included above both before and after anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam. On the Oak guys are getting brown trout hook ups each day with that action seeming to heat up as the fresh salmon action begins to cool down. The river flow has increased with the rain this week. Oh winds could shift it this way and that would mean well get some snow. The 2nd will be a 2 day event September 4th and 5th. I for one am glad for some consistent winter weather to at least reset seasonal conditions after the mild fall. Increased flow releases on Eighteenmile Creek (Niagara County), Oak Orchard Creek (Orleans County), and Sandy Creek (Monroe and Orleans counties).
